Next State Logic Synthesis

You will derive Boolean expressions for next-state combinational logic using state transition tables to control the progression of the machine.

In this lesson, you will learn how to transform your conceptual state transition table into the physical Boolean equations that dictate your machine’s behavior.

From Diagrams to Logic

We have already defined our states and created a transition table. Now, we must bridge the gap between our abstract design and the hardware. Next State Logic Synthesis is the process of generating the combinational logic that "tells" a flip-flop what its value should be at the next clock cycle.

In a synchronous system, your state variables (e.g., Q1,Q0Q_1, Q_0) are stored in flip-flops. The "Next State" logic is the gate-heavy hardware sitting between the current state outputs and the flip-flop inputs (like the D input on a D-flip-flop).

Deriving the Expressions

To synthesize this, follow these steps:

  1. Identify Inputs: Your logic takes the current state bits and external inputs (like Reset or Enable) as its variables.
  2. Map to Next State: Use your transition table to identify exactly when the "Next State" bit should be a 1.
  3. Formulate: Treat each "Next State" bit as a separate Boolean function.

For example, if you have a 2-bit state machine where the Next State bit D1 is 1 only when the system is in State 01 (input 0) or State 10 (input 1), you write that logic out as a Sum-of-Products:

D1 = (Q1' * Q0 * X') + (Q1 * Q0' * X)

By applying the Karnaugh Map techniques you learned earlier, you simplify these expressions to minimize the number of gates required. Once you have the minimized expression for every flip-flop input, you simply draw the gates (AND, OR, NOT) to connect your current state flip-flop outputs back to their own D inputs.

This creates a closed-loop feedback system where the circuit essentially "computes its own future." You have successfully translated a high-level state diagram into a tangible schematic of logic gates.

Key Takeaway: Next State Logic Synthesis is the systematic conversion of a state transition table into Boolean equations, allowing you to build the combinational "brain" that drives your flip-flops to the correct next state.
