Implementing Delta Compression for Property Updates

Configure conditional property replication to send data updates only when values change, minimizing unnecessary traffic between the server and clients.

In this lesson, you will learn how to optimize bandwidth by ensuring that Unreal Engine only transmits property data to clients when the value has actually changed since the last acknowledged state.

Understanding Delta Compression

At its core, Delta Compression is about comparing the "current state" of a replicated variable against the "last successfully acknowledged state" for a specific client. In a standard replication setup, if a variable stays the same, the engine avoids sending redundant data. However, as your game grows, complex structures can lead to "chatter," where the server sends the same data repeatedly.

By leveraging Unreal's property system, we use DOREPLIFETIME_CONDITION to control when specific variables are included in a packet. When a property is marked for replication, the engine keeps a copy of the last value sent to each client. During the next replication update, it compares the current value with the cached version; if they are identical, the engine skips serialization for that property, effectively reducing the payload size for that specific connection.

Implementing Conditional Replication

To implement this, you must override GetLifetimeReplicatedProps in your Actor class. Instead of a generic replication macro, you can use conditional macros to define the criteria for transmission.

void AMyCharacter::GetLifetimeReplicatedProps(TArray<FLifetimeProperty>& OutLifetimeProps) const
{
    Super::GetLifetimeReplicatedProps(OutLifetimeProps);

    // Only replicate this property if it has changed, and
    // only to the owner of this actor to save bandwidth.
    DOREPLIFETIME_CONDITION(AMyCharacter, MyCustomStats, COND_OwnerOnly);
}

By using conditions like COND_OwnerOnly or COND_SkipOwner, you prevent unnecessary data from being broadcast to every client in the scene. When combined with the engine's built-in dirty-flag system, the network driver only serializes the "delta"—the change—rather than the entire object state. This ensures that a character’s inventory or complex status effects don't flood the network unless an actual modification occurs, keeping your game's bandwidth usage predictable and efficient.

Key Takeaway: Delta compression and conditional replication allow you to minimize network load by only serializing property changes, ensuring that redundant, unchanged data is never sent across the wire.
