Optimizing Network Bandwidth With Replication Conditions
In this lesson, you will learn how to drastically reduce your game's network footprint by using conditional replication to prevent unnecessary data from being sent to clients who don’t need it.
The Core Concept: Conditional Replication
By default, when you mark a variable as Replicated, Unreal Engine attempts to synchronize its value to every client that knows about the Actor. However, in a multiplayer game, much of this data is redundant. For example, a player doesn't need to receive constant updates about their own "private" inventory state if they are already tracking it locally, nor do they need high-frequency updates about a distant player’s ammo count.
Unreal provides DOREPLIFETIME_CONDITION to filter these updates. Instead of always replicating, we specify a COND_ flag to instruct the server to only send the data under specific circumstances.
Practical Implementation
To apply this, you must override the GetLifetimeReplicatedProps function in your AActor subclass.
void AMyCharacter::GetLifetimeReplicatedProps(TArray<FLifetimeProperty>& OutLifetimeProps) const
{
Super::GetLifetimeReplicatedProps(OutLifetimeProps);
// Replicate only to the owner (e.g., hidden quest objectives or local stats)
DOREPLIFETIME_CONDITION(AMyCharacter, PrivateInventoryData, COND_OwnerOnly);
// Replicate only to everyone EXCEPT the owner (e.g., footstep audio triggers)
DOREPLIFETIME_CONDITION(AMyCharacter, FootstepVFXTrigger, COND_SkipOwner);
}
By using COND_OwnerOnly, you ensure that sensitive or irrelevant data stays on the server and the specific client owning that object, saving bandwidth that would otherwise be wasted on proxies. COND_SkipOwner is equally powerful for cosmetic or HUD data that the local player already knows through local logic, preventing "echo" updates that clutter the network stream.
Beyond these flags, you can also use COND_InitialOnly for data that never changes after the actor is spawned, or COND_Custom if you need to build a bespoke check using SetCustomIsActiveOverride. Choosing the right condition allows your network packets to carry only the essential information, keeping your game responsive even as the player count grows.
Key Takeaway: Use conditional replication flags like COND_OwnerOnly and COND_SkipOwner to prune your replication stream, ensuring that only necessary data is sent to relevant clients.
