Lesson 748 of 88010. Networking and ReplicationFree lesson

Implementing Custom Struct Serialization for Network Payloads

Override the NetSerialize function to manually pack and unpack struct data, significantly reducing the bandwidth required for complex game state.

In this lesson, you will learn how to manually pack and unpack your custom struct data using NetSerialize to achieve surgical precision over your network bandwidth.

By default, Unreal’s replication system serializes USTRUCT properties individually, which is convenient but often inefficient. When you have complex game states—like a compact inventory array or a compressed combat-state struct—you can override the NetSerialize function to dictate exactly how your data is represented in a bitstream.

The Power of Bit-Packing

Instead of sending a full 32-bit float for a value that only ranges from 0 to 1, you can map that value to a single byte or even a few bits. When you override NetSerialize, you gain access to FArchive& Ar. By using the << operator on your variables, you define the sequence and format of the data being written to the network buffer.

bool FMyGameState::NetSerialize(FArchive& Ar, class UPackageMap* Map, bool& bOutSuccess)
{
    // Pack our variables into the bitstream manually
    uint8 CompressedHealth = FMath::Clamp((int32)Health, 0, 255);
    Ar << CompressedHealth;

    // Only replicate location if a specific flag is set
    bool bHasLocation = Location.SizeSquared() > 0.0f;
    Ar.SerializeBits(&bHasLocation, 1);

    if (bHasLocation)
    {
        Ar << Location;
    }

    bOutSuccess = true;
    return true;
}

Why This Matters

When you handle serialization manually, you stop sending "default" values that don't need to be there. In the example above, we conditionally serialize the Location vector only if it’s active, effectively saving bandwidth whenever the character is at the origin.

To make this work, your struct must define NetSerialize and you must implement NetDeltaSerialize if you want to support efficient differential updates for arrays. By taking manual control, you bypass the generic reflection-based system, allowing you to prioritize the most important data while discarding redundant information before it ever hits the wire.

Key Takeaway: Overriding NetSerialize allows you to compress data and omit unnecessary fields, turning your network payload from a "one-size-fits-all" packet into a highly optimized, custom bitstream.
