Handling Late Joining Players With Initial State Replication

You will ensure that players who join a game in progress correctly receive the current state of all replicated variables.

In this lesson, you will learn how to ensure late-joining players synchronize with the current game state by leveraging Unreal Engine’s automatic property replication system.

The Problem of the "Late Joiner"

When a client connects to a server, it does not immediately know the state of every Actor already present in the world. If you have a GameState variable like ActiveRoundTimer or a PlayerState variable like CurrentScore, a late-joining player will see these as their default values until the server happens to trigger another update. This creates a "stale state" issue.

Relying on the Initial Replication

Unreal Engine handles this automatically through the replication system. When a connection is established, the server performs an "initial replication" for all relevant actors. This means any property marked for replication with Replicated or ReplicatedUsing is automatically sent to the new client as part of the initial handshake.

The critical requirement is ensuring your GetLifetimeReplicatedProps is configured correctly, as the engine uses this to know exactly what state must be pushed to the new client upon joining.

void AMyGameState::GetLifetimeReplicatedProps(TArray<FLifetimeProperty>& OutLifetimeProps) const
{
    Super::GetLifetimeReplicatedProps(OutLifetimeProps);

    // This ensures that when a player joins, they receive the current value
    // of RoundTimer regardless of when it was last changed.
    DOREPLIFETIME(AMyGameState, RoundTimer);
}

Best Practices for Late Joins

If your logic relies on complex state—such as a series of events that happened in the past—don't try to "replay" them. Instead, treat the current state as a single "source of truth."

  1. Use RepNotify: If a late-joining client needs to trigger logic (like updating a UI) once they receive the initial state, use ReplicatedUsing. The RepNotify function will fire on the client even when receiving the initial state after joining.
  2. Avoid "On-Join" RPCs: You rarely need a custom "SendMeTheData" RPC. If you have properly registered your variables in GetLifetimeReplicatedProps, the engine’s internal replication logic ensures the client receives the data without any extra work.

Key Takeaway: By correctly defining your Replicated variables in GetLifetimeReplicatedProps, Unreal’s engine automatically pushes the current state to late-joining players, ensuring they are perfectly synchronized with the server upon connection.
