Managing Variable Conflicts With Custom Replication Conditions

You will write custom condition logic to handle complex scenarios where variable replication depends on dynamic gameplay state changes.

In this lesson, you will learn how to resolve complex variable synchronization conflicts by implementing conditional logic within GetLifetimeReplicatedProps.

The Challenge of Dynamic Replication

Standard replication conditions (like COND_OwnerOnly) are often too static for modern multiplayer games. You may encounter scenarios where a variable—such as a "Secret Objective" or a "Hidden Status Effect"—needs to be replicated based on transient gameplay logic rather than just ownership. If two gameplay systems try to modify the visibility of a variable simultaneously based on different criteria, you end up with a replication conflict where the client receives stale or incorrect data.

Implementing Custom Conditions

To handle this, we move beyond simple enum conditions. While GetLifetimeReplicatedProps typically uses standard DOREPLIFETIME_CONDITION macros, we can achieve fine-grained control by using DOREPLIFETIME_CONDITION_NOTIFY. This allows us to define custom logic that evaluates whether a variable should be sent based on the current NetRole and the specific state of the Actor.

Consider a scenario where a player’s "Power Level" should only replicate to teammates if the player is within a specific "Squad Radius":

void AMyCharacter::GetLifetimeReplicatedProps(TArray<FLifetimeProperty>& OutLifetimeProps) const
{
    Super::GetLifetimeReplicatedProps(OutLifetimeProps);

    // Custom condition logic using a condition-specific wrapper
    DOREPLIFETIME_CONDITION(AMyCharacter, PowerLevel, COND_Custom);
}

bool AMyCharacter::IsReplicationReady(const FProperty& Property, const FReplicationFlags& Flags) const
{
    // Custom check: Only replicate to others if they are in the same squad
    if (Property.GetFName() == GET_MEMBER_NAME_CHECKED(AMyCharacter, PowerLevel))
    {
        return IsInSameSquad(CurrentViewer);
    }
    return true;
}

Avoiding Conflicts

When managing these conditions, the conflict usually arises when the logic for "who sees what" changes mid-frame. To prevent this, always ensure your custom condition function is deterministic and relies on the state authorized by the server. If you determine visibility based on a variable that is also being replicated, you risk a "chicken-and-egg" scenario. Always base your custom conditions on authoritative server state that is updated prior to the replication check.

Key Takeaway: By implementing custom replication logic inside GetLifetimeReplicatedProps and related helper functions, you gain the ability to dynamically filter data based on real-time game states, effectively resolving conflicts where standard ownership conditions fall short.
