In this lesson, you will learn how to trigger a seamless transition from your character's active animation state into a physics-driven ragdoll upon death or impact.
Understanding the Physics Transition
When a character is alive, the Skeletal Mesh follows the predefined keyframe animations. To create a realistic death, we must stop the animation and hand control over to the Physics Asset we defined in previous lessons.
The secret to a seamless transition lies in the Set All Bodies Simulate Physics node combined with Stop commands for the Mesh. When the trigger event occurs, you don't just "turn off" the animation; you want to swap the control source from the Animation Blueprint to the Physics Simulation.
Implementation Strategy
To implement this in your Character Blueprint, follow this logic flow:
- Disable Movement: Call
Stop Movement Immediatelyon theCharacterMovementComponentso the character doesn't slide around while limp. - Disable Capsule Collision: Set the
Collision Presetsof theCapsuleComponentto ignore the physics body, otherwise, the capsule will get stuck on the floor, preventing the mesh from settling. - Enable Physics Simulation: Use the
Set All Bodies Simulate Physicsnode on yourMeshcomponent, set toTrue.
// Logic flow inside your Character Blueprint
Mesh->SetAllBodiesSimulatePhysics(true);
Mesh->SetSimulatePhysics(true);
Mesh->GetAnimInstance()->StopAllMontages(0.0f);
CharacterMovement->DisableMovement();
CapsuleComponent->SetCollisionEnabled(ECollisionEnabled::NoCollision);
Smoothing the Hand-off
To prevent a "pop" where the character instantly snaps from their animation pose to a physics pose, ensure your Physics Asset joint limits are correctly configured. If your joints are too loose, the character might collapse unnaturally; if they are too tight, they look like a stiff statue. By using the Physics Asset editor to fine-tune Angular Limits, you ensure that when the transition happens, the skeleton maintains the momentum and pose of the final animation frame, creating a fluid drop.
Key Takeaway: By disabling the Capsule collision and toggling the Mesh to simulate physics while stopping the animation, you achieve a seamless hand-off that allows the engine's physics solver to take over the character's movement naturally.
