Using Animation Curves for Logic Triggers
In this lesson, you will learn how to leverage animation curves as precise, frame-accurate triggers to fire game logic directly from your character’s animations.
Why Curves Instead of Notifies?
While you might be familiar with Animation Notifies (AnimNotifies) for playing sounds, animation curves offer a different advantage: they allow you to track values over time. By adding a curve to your animation asset, you can treat the animation timeline like a data track. For example, you can create a curve called FootstepIntensity that goes from 0 to 1 when a foot hits the ground.
Instead of just saying "play a sound," your game logic can read the curve value to adjust the volume or intensity of that sound dynamically based on how hard the foot strikes the floor.
Extracting Curve Data in the AnimGraph
To use this data in your logic, you retrieve the curve value inside your Animation Blueprint. You can use the Get Curve Value node, passing in the name of the curve you defined in your animation asset.
If you are setting up a weapon effect—like a muzzle flash glow—you could create a float curve that spikes to 1 during the frame the trigger is pulled. In your Event Blueprint Update Animation, you can access this value:
// Logic snippet for reading curve data
float MuzzleGlow = GetCurveValue(FName("MuzzleFlash_Curve"));
if (MuzzleGlow > 0.5f) {
// Activate the particle emitter or light intensity
}
This method is highly effective for visual effects that need to "ramp up" or "fade out" in sync with the animation mesh. Because the curve is baked into the animation, it is perfectly synchronized with the character's movement, meaning your logic will never be "off" by a single frame, even if the animation plays at different speeds. By mapping specific ranges of the curve to game events, you create a seamless connection between your character's visual performance and their mechanical impact on the world.
Key Takeaway: Animation curves allow you to drive game logic with frame-perfect precision, enabling dynamic responses that evolve alongside your animation’s movement.
