Automating Asset Migration and Retargeting Workflows

You will establish a streamlined pipeline to quickly apply existing animation libraries to newly imported character models in Unreal.

In this lesson, you will learn how to bypass repetitive manual setup by utilizing IK Retargeter presets and Bulk Asset Actions to map animation libraries to new characters in seconds.

When working with large animation libraries, manually retargeting every individual sequence to a new character is a massive time sink. By automating this workflow, we treat the character's skeleton as a template rather than a unique hurdle.

The Automation Pipeline

The secret to a streamlined workflow is the IK Retargeter asset. Once you have configured your IK Rig (Lesson 19) and established your Retarget Chains (Lesson 20), you don’t need to configure settings again for each animation.

Instead, you use the Batch Retargeting tool:

  1. Select all the Animation Sequence assets in your Content Browser that you wish to convert to your new character.
  2. Right-click and navigate to Retarget Animation Assets > Duplicate and Retarget Animation Assets.
  3. In the resulting window, select the IK Retargeter you previously refined.
  4. Unreal will automatically map the source bone transforms to your new target skeleton based on the chains you defined.

Scripting for Speed

If you are working with a project that requires frequent character swaps, you can utilize the Editor Utility Widget to automate the duplicate process. Below is the logic flow you would represent in a Blueprint:

// Pseudocode for automated batch retargeting
TArray<UObject*> SelectedAnimations = EditorUtilityLibrary::GetSelectedAssets();
UObject* MyRetargeter = LoadObject<UObject>(nullptr, TEXT("/Game/Animations/IK_Retargeter"));

for (UObject* Anim : SelectedAnimations) {
    // This executes the bulk retarget logic programmatically
    RetargeterBlueprintLibrary::RetargetAnimations(SelectedAnimations, MyRetargeter);
}

By maintaining a consistent naming convention for your bones and chains, the Retargeter will recognize the structure instantly. When you import a new model, you simply ensure it follows your standard hierarchy, assign the existing IK Rig, and run the batch process. This turns a multi-hour task of manual re-mapping into a simple, automated button-click operation, ensuring your character team can focus on animation quality rather than technical grunt work.

Key Takeaway: Automating your retargeting workflow relies on standardized Retarget Chains and the Batch Retargeting tool to map entire animation libraries to new rigs in a single operation.
