Synchronizing Foot Placement with Animation Notifies

Students will place animation notifies on specific frames to trigger footstep sound effects and particle systems precisely during character locomotion cycles.

In this lesson, you will learn how to trigger sound effects and visual particles at the exact moment your character’s foot strikes the ground using Animation Notifies.

The Concept of Animation Notifies

Animation Notifies (or AnimNotifies) are essentially "markers" you place on the timeline of an animation sequence. When the animation playback head hits one of these markers, it sends a signal to the engine to execute specific logic. Instead of guessing when a foot hits the ground, you can visually align these notifies with the exact frame where the foot makes contact.

Placing Notifies in the Animation Editor

  1. Open your Animation Sequence (e.g., your run or walk cycle).
  2. Look at the Notifies track below the timeline.
  3. Scrub the timeline to the exact frame where the heel touches the ground.
  4. Right-click the track, select Add Notify, and choose New Notify... (or select a pre-existing one like PlaySound).
  5. Name your notify something descriptive, like Footstep_Left.

Triggering Logic in the Animation Blueprint

Once your notify is set, you need to handle it. Go to the Event Graph of your Animation Blueprint. You can right-click and search for the name you gave your notify (e.g., AnimNotify_Footstep_Left).

When this event fires, you can spawn a particle system or trigger a sound:

// Within your AnimBP Event Graph
Event AnimNotify_Footstep_Left -> PlaySoundAtLocation(FootstepCue, GetActorLocation)
                                   -> SpawnEmitterAtLocation(DustParticle, FootPosition)

By placing these notifications on the ground-contact frames, you eliminate "skating" audio, where the sound plays before or after the foot actually hits the floor. This provides a tactile, grounded feel to your character's locomotion, ensuring the player perceives the weight and rhythm of every step. As you refine your Blend Spaces or Locomotion State Machines, remember that these notifies stay attached to the animation asset, ensuring your footsteps remain accurate even when the character speeds up or slows down.

Key Takeaway: Animation Notifies turn visual movement into actionable game events, allowing for perfectly synchronized audio and visual feedback during locomotion.
