Refactoring Expensive Logic into Asynchronous Tasks
In this lesson, you will learn how to prevent frame rate drops by moving intensive AI decision-making processes off the main game thread.
The Problem: Main Thread Bottlenecks
In Unreal Engine, the "Game Thread" is responsible for updating actor locations, running AI logic, and processing user input. When your AI performs complex calculations—like scanning a large grid for tactical cover points or evaluating hundreds of potential targets—it consumes the Game Thread’s time budget. If that calculation exceeds 16.6ms, your game experiences a stutter or "hitch."
The Solution: Asynchronous Tasks
Instead of running these heavy calculations synchronously (all at once), we can offload them to background worker threads using the FNonAbandonableTask or AsyncTask patterns. By doing this, the Game Thread can continue rendering frames while the worker thread churns through the AI logic in the background.
When the calculation is finished, the task signals back to the Game Thread to update the AI’s Blackboard or state machine with the result.
Example Implementation Concept
Imagine an AI that needs to calculate the "ideal ambush spot" based on thousands of data points. Instead of running a for loop in Tick(), we wrap it in an asynchronous operation:
// Offload to background thread
AsyncTask(ENamedThreads::AnyBackgroundThreadNormalTask, [this]() {
// Perform the heavy, complex math here
FVector BestLocation = PerformIntensiveCalculations();
// Return the result to the game thread to update state
AsyncTask(ENamedThreads::GameThread, [this, BestLocation]() {
this->Blackboard->SetValueAsVector(AmbushLocationKey, BestLocation);
});
});
By decoupling the "calculation" from the "application" of the result, the Game Thread remains free to process animations and movement. Note that when accessing data across threads, you must ensure thread safety by either copying the necessary data into the task or using thread-safe containers. Avoid modifying any UObjects directly on the background thread, as they are not thread-safe.
Key Takeaway: By offloading heavy AI computations to background threads and only returning the result to the Game Thread, you ensure a smooth, hitch-free experience even when your agents are performing complex tactical reasoning.
