Debugging Complex AI States with Visual Loggers

Utilize Unreal's Visual Logger to track state transitions and Blackboard updates in real-time for diagnosing intricate AI behavior issues.

In this lesson, you will learn how to leverage Unreal’s Visual Logger to capture real-time state transitions and Blackboard updates, turning opaque AI logic into a transparent timeline of events.

Why Visual Logger?

As your AI grows in complexity—using hybrid state machines and dynamic EQS queries—it becomes nearly impossible to track the exact moment an AI switches from "Patrolling" to "Flanking" using standard breakpoints. The Visual Logger acts as a "flight data recorder," allowing you to scrub backward through your AI’s history to see exactly which state was active and what data existed in the Blackboard at that precise microsecond.

Capturing Custom Events

To make the most of the Visual Logger, you should use the UE_VLOG macro within your C++ AI tasks or state transition logic. Unlike standard logs, UE_VLOG associates text, shapes, and category tags with a specific actor's lifecycle.

For example, when your AI transitions states in a C++ Finite State Machine, you can log the event:

// Inside your AI Controller or State logic
UE_VLOG(this, LogTemp, Verbose, TEXT("AI State Transition: %s -> %s | Target: %s"),
    *CurrentStateName, *NewStateName, *Blackboard->GetValueAsObject("TargetActor")->GetName());

Analyzing the Timeline

Once you run your game with the Visual Logger enabled (VisualLogger command in the console), you can open the Visual Logger Tool (Window > Developer Tools > Visual Logger).

  1. Scrubbing: Move the timeline slider to the point where the AI failed to trigger a flank or got stuck in an EQS loop.
  2. Blackboard Snapshots: If you’ve configured your Blackboard to report its state, you can click on the actor in the log to inspect the Blackboard keys at that specific timestamp.
  3. Spatial Context: Because Visual Logger captures spatial data, you will see exactly where the AI was standing when it decided to execute a specific query. If your "Tactical Orientation" logic based on Dot Products failed, you can visually verify if the AI was at the correct angle relative to its target in the playback view.

Key Takeaway: The Visual Logger transforms abstract state transitions into a synchronized, spatial timeline, allowing you to debug complex decision-making by correlating specific Blackboard values with physical AI behavior over time.
