Visualizing and Debugging AI Pathfinding

Learners will utilize Unreal’s navigation visualization tools to identify and resolve pathfinding failures or unreachable areas in their game levels.

In this lesson, you will learn how to leverage Unreal Engine’s built-in visualization tools to diagnose why your AI characters are getting stuck or failing to reach their intended destinations.

When an AI fails to move, it is rarely a logic error in your behavior tree; it is usually a disconnect in the navigation geometry. The primary tool for this is the Navigation Mesh (NavMesh) visualization. By pressing P while in the Editor viewport, you can toggle the green overlay that represents walkable surfaces. If your AI cannot reach a platform, scan this overlay for gaps, thin strips, or floating fragments that indicate the NavMesh failed to generate correctly in those areas.

Using the Navigation Debugger

For a more granular look, access the Navigation Debugger by going to Window > Developer Tools > Debug Tools > Navigation. Once active, you can see real-time path lines. When your AI is ordered to move, the debugger draws a colored path line (typically white or blue) from the AI to the target.

If the line stops abruptly or shows a "path failed" status, you have an unreachable area. You can troubleshoot this by:

  1. Inspecting NavMesh Bounds: Ensure your NavMeshBoundsVolume fully encompasses the area.
  2. Checking Agent Properties: If your AI is physically too wide to pass through a doorway, the NavMesh generation settings might have excluded that corridor. Compare your character's NavAgent radius with the Agent Radius in your RecastNavMesh settings.
  3. Evaluating Dynamic Obstacles: If the path fails only during gameplay, check if dynamic actors are blocking the path. If they have Can Affect Navigation checked, they may be carving holes in your NavMesh that make the destination impossible to reach.

Debugging with Console Commands

When running in the "Play In Editor" (PIE) mode, use the console (the tilde ` key) to view paths for specific actors: show Navigation DisplayPath

These commands allow you to see exactly where the AI thinks it needs to go versus where the navigation system is actually allowing it to step.

Key Takeaway: Pathfinding failures are almost always visual mismatches between your level geometry and the generated NavMesh, which can be instantly identified by toggling the P key and analyzing path lines in the Navigation Debugger.
