Integrating TypeScript with Expo

Set up strict type checking and path aliasing for a scalable mobile codebase.

Integrating TypeScript with Expo

In this lesson, you will learn how to enforce strict type safety and simplify your project imports to build a professional, scalable codebase.

When you initialize an Expo project, TypeScript is often an optional layer. To make it a robust foundation for your app, we need to move beyond simple syntax and configure strict type checking and path aliasing.

Strict Type Checking

Strict mode acts as a "guardrail" for your logic. Without it, TypeScript might infer types too loosely, leading to hidden bugs. By setting "strict": true in your tsconfig.json, you force the compiler to flag common issues—like null or undefined values being used where they shouldn’t be.

Open your tsconfig.json and ensure these flags are active:

{
  "compilerOptions": {
    "strict": true,
    "noImplicitAny": true,
    "esModuleInterop": true,
    "skipLibCheck": true
  }
}

Path Aliasing

As your project grows, your folder structure will get deep. Instead of importing components using "the dot-dot-slash nightmare" (../../components/Button), path aliasing allows you to use clean, absolute paths like @components/Button.

You configure this in your tsconfig.json under compilerOptions by defining the baseUrl and paths:

{
  "compilerOptions": {
    "baseUrl": ".",
    "paths": {
      "@components/*": ["src/components/*"],
      "@hooks/*": ["src/hooks/*"]
    }
  }
}

By pointing these aliases to your src directory, you decouple your import logic from your file structure. If you ever move a component from one folder to another, you won't need to update every single import statement in your project; the alias remains the same, saving you significant time during refactoring.

When you combine strict checking with path aliases, you ensure that your code is not only safer to write but also much easier to navigate and maintain as your Expo project scales into a production-ready application.

Key Takeaway: Strict type checking prevents runtime surprises, while path aliasing keeps your project structure clean and refactor-friendly.
