Initializing Projects with Expo CLI

Configure a new universal project with the appropriate template for mobile-first development.

In this lesson, you will learn how to initialize a universal React Native project using Expo CLI to ensure a solid foundation for mobile-first development.

The Foundation of Your Project

When starting a new application, you want a project structure that is pre-configured for cross-platform success. Using npx create-expo-app is the industry standard for scaffolding these projects because it abstracts away complex native configuration, allowing you to focus on building features rather than wrestling with build tools.

By choosing the appropriate template, you ensure that your project starts with the essential dependencies and directory structure required for a managed workflow.

Initializing the Project

To create your project, open your terminal and run the following command:

npx create-expo-app@latest my-awesome-app

When you run this, Expo CLI will generate a project folder containing the app.json configuration file, which serves as the "brain" of your app. This is where you define your platform-specific settings, such as app icons, splash screens, and bundle identifiers for both iOS and Android.

For mobile-first development, the default template provides a clean slate. It includes expo-router by default, which is designed to handle file-based navigation, making it much easier to keep your cross-platform UI organized as your app grows. Once the initialization finishes, you simply navigate into your folder with cd my-awesome-app and start the development server using npx expo start.

Why a Template Matters

Starting with the right template ensures that your build configuration—the bridge between your JavaScript code and the native device—is correctly optimized from day one. Because Expo manages the native layer for you, you avoid common pitfalls like mismatched library versions or incorrect project structures that often plague developers starting from scratch. By sticking to the standard Expo initialization, you keep your project maintainable and ready for future upgrades.

Key Takeaway: Initializing with create-expo-app provides a standardized, mobile-first file structure that abstracts native complexity and sets the stage for a seamless cross-platform development experience.
