Certificate Transparency

Implement certificate pinning strategies that survive rotation without breaking end-user connectivity.

In this lesson, you will learn how to implement "Certificate Transparency" (CT) in your React Native app to ensure your SSL pinning strategy remains resilient even when server certificates rotate.

Understanding Certificate Transparency

When you use SSL pinning, your app "hardcodes" a specific certificate or public key. If your server rotates that certificate (which happens every few months for security), your app will stop connecting, resulting in a broken user experience.

Certificate Transparency is an open framework that logs every SSL certificate issued by a Certificate Authority in public, append-only ledgers. Instead of pinning a single, fragile certificate, you can verify that the certificate presented by your server is backed by a "Signed Certificate Timestamp" (SCT). This proves that the certificate is legitimate and publicly logged, allowing your app to accept any certificate from a trusted authority that meets this transparency requirement.

Implementing Rotation-Resilient Pinning

To avoid breaking your app during rotation, move away from pinning the specific leaf certificate. Instead, pin the Root CA or use CT verification. In a React Native bare workflow, you can utilize libraries that hook into the native NetworkSecurityConfig (on Android) or App Transport Security (on iOS).

Here is how you define a trust strategy that favors CT over rigid pinning:

<!-- android/app/src/main/res/xml/network_security_config.xml -->
<network-security-config>
    <domain-config>
        <domain includeSubdomains="true">api.yourdomain.com</domain>
        <trust-anchors>
            <!-- Pin to the trusted CA rather than the specific server key -->
            <certificates src="@raw/my_trusted_ca" />
        </trust-anchors>
    </domain-config>
</network-security-config>

By pinning the CA, you allow your app to trust any certificate issued by that CA, provided the certificate is valid and transparently logged. This means when your server team updates the leaf certificate, your app continues to function seamlessly because the underlying authority remains the same.

To take it a step further, ensure your backend server includes the SCT in its TLS handshake. Most modern mobile network libraries for React Native will automatically validate these logs if configured at the native level, providing a balance between high-security pinning and the flexibility required for maintenance.

Key Takeaway: Rather than pinning a single, short-lived certificate, pin the Root Certificate Authority or validate Certificate Transparency logs to maintain secure connections that survive server-side rotation.
