Configuring the Character Movement Component

You will customize the Character Movement Component to define physical parameters like gravity, walking speed, and jump height for your character.

In this lesson, you will learn how to fine-tune your character’s physical feel by customizing the built-in CharacterMovementComponent.

When you use the Character class, Unreal Engine automatically provides a robust CharacterMovementComponent. This component is the "brain" behind how your character interacts with the world’s physics, handling everything from walking on floors to sliding off ledges. Instead of writing custom physics math from scratch, you configure the properties already provided by this component to define your game’s unique "feel."

Adjusting Movement Parameters

You can modify these settings directly within the Details Panel of your Character Blueprint or through C++ in the constructor. The three most impactful settings for beginners are:

  • Max Walk Speed: Defines how fast the character moves on the ground.
  • Jump Z Velocity: Determines the initial upward force applied when the character jumps.
  • Gravity Scale: Multiplies the global gravity, allowing you to create "floaty" or "heavy" movement styles.

If you are working in C++, you can access these values through the component reference inside your character’s constructor:

// Accessing the component within the ACharacter subclass
GetCharacterMovement()->MaxWalkSpeed = 600.0f;
GetCharacterMovement()->JumpZVelocity = 500.0f;
GetCharacterMovement()->GravityScale = 1.5f;

Why Configuration Matters

Think of these variables as the "tuning knobs" for your game's personality. If you are building a fast-paced arena shooter, you might set a high MaxWalkSpeed and a lower GravityScale to encourage agility. If you are building a survival horror game, you might lower the MaxWalkSpeed to make the player feel vulnerable and slow.

Because this component is integrated with the Character class, it automatically handles network replication and collision detection for you. By simply changing these numeric values, you achieve professional-grade movement polish without needing to manage complex physics states or force calculations manually.

Key Takeaway: The Character Movement Component is a pre-built physics system that allows you to define your game's movement identity by simply adjusting exposed parameters like speed, gravity, and jump force.
