In this lesson, you will learn how to breathe life into your Character class by connecting a skeletal mesh to a state-driven animation system.
The Role of the Skeletal Mesh
While a StaticMesh is a rigid object, a SkeletalMesh is a collection of vertices influenced by a hierarchy of bones. To make your character move, you don't just move the mesh; you animate the underlying skeleton. In Unreal Engine, we manage this through an Animation Blueprint. Think of the Character as the body and the Animation Blueprint as the brain that decides which pose to play based on the character's movement.
Connecting the Mesh
When you create a Character class, it comes pre-equipped with a USkeletalMeshComponent. Your first task is to assign a specific mesh asset to this component. In your character's constructor, you reference the mesh component to ensure it is ready to receive animation data:
// Within your Character constructor
GetMesh()->SetSkeletalMesh(MySkeletalMeshAsset);
GetMesh()->SetAnimationMode(EAnimationMode::AnimationBlueprint);
GetMesh()->SetAnimInstanceClass(MyAnimBlueprintClass);
Animating via Movement States
The magic happens when you link the CharacterMovementComponent to your animation logic. By default, the Character exposes variables like Velocity or IsFalling. Inside your Animation Blueprint, you create a State Machine.
A state machine acts like a flowchart:
- Idle/Walk State: You drive this by reading the
Speedof your character (calculated fromVelocity.Size()). - Jump State: You transition here when
IsFallingbecomes true.
The Animation Blueprint continuously updates these states, blending animations smoothly so that your character transitions naturally from a walk into a run, or from a run into a jump. By decoupling the movement logic (handled in the Character class) from the visual playback (handled in the Animation Blueprint), you create a robust system where animations automatically reflect the state of your game logic.
Key Takeaway: Managing skeletal animations requires linking a skeletal mesh to an Animation Blueprint, which acts as a state machine to translate your Character's gameplay movement into fluid, visual poses.
