Optimizing CPU Task Scheduling for Mobile

Balance the threading model by restricting intensive background tasks to prevent thermal throttling and battery drain on mobile processors.

In this lesson, you will learn how to balance your threading model to prevent thermal throttling and battery drain by intelligently restricting intensive background tasks on mobile processors.

Mobile chips (SoCs) utilize a "big.LITTLE" architecture, where high-performance cores handle demanding tasks while efficiency cores manage background operations. When you flood the CPU with too many concurrent background tasks—like heavy asset streaming, complex procedural generation, or long-running data processing—the OS often spins up all cores to high frequencies. This leads to a rapid spike in temperature, triggering thermal throttling that slashes your frame rate, while simultaneously draining the user's battery.

To optimize this, you must treat the mobile CPU as a finite, precious resource rather than a desktop-class playground.

Controlling Task Parallelism

Unreal Engine uses the FQueuedThreadPool system for background tasks. On mobile, you should avoid spawning an unbounded number of tasks. Instead, use a throttled approach by checking the hardware constraints before pushing work to the AsyncTask system or custom thread pools.

You can restrict background task intensity by utilizing FTaskGraphInterface or managing your own task priorities based on the device's thermal state. For instance, defer heavy calculations until the device is idle, or limit your worker threads specifically for mobile builds:

// Example: Restricting background thread count for mobile
if (FPlatformProperties::IsMobilePlatform())
{
    // Limit background tasks to prioritize efficiency cores
    // This prevents the OS from triggering "big" cores unnecessarily
    GThreadPool->Resize(2);
}

Strategic Scheduling

Avoid "bursty" tasks that perform massive memory allocation or complex math across multiple frames. Instead, implement a Task Pacing system. If you have a large batch of data to process, break it into smaller sub-tasks and distribute them across several frames using FTimerManager or by yielding execution. This keeps the CPU usage curve flat, preventing the thermal sensors from hitting the limit that triggers frequency downclocking. By keeping the CPU load steady and low, you prevent the device from entering a high-heat state that would otherwise ruin your frame consistency.

Key Takeaway: To avoid thermal throttling on mobile, throttle your background thread count and pace high-CPU tasks across multiple frames to maintain a low, steady thermal profile.
