Profiling Animation Blueprint Performance Costs

Use the animation budget allocator to monitor and optimize the computational cost of character animation updates in complex scenes.

In this lesson, you will learn how to leverage the Animation Budget Allocator to dynamically manage and throttle character animation costs to maintain a stable frame rate in complex scenes.

When you have dozens of characters on screen, the cost of updating Animation Blueprints (AnimBPs) can quickly become a bottleneck on the Game Thread. Instead of manually optimizing every individual character, the Animation Budget Allocator acts as a "budget controller." It tracks the time spent on animation work per frame and dynamically adjusts the update rate or LOD of your characters based on their visual importance to the player.

Enabling and Monitoring the Allocator

First, you must enable the plugin in your project settings. Once active, you can monitor its behavior in real-time using console commands. Use a.AnimBudget.Enabled 1 to turn it on, and stat AnimBudget to visualize how your characters are being throttled.

The system works by assigning a "Budget" (in milliseconds) for animation work. If the budget is exceeded, the allocator will skip frames for less important characters (those further away or off-screen).

Configuring the Budget

You can tune the budget based on your target hardware performance using these console variables:

  • a.AnimBudget.Budget: Sets the frame time budget in milliseconds (e.g., 1.5).
  • a.AnimBudget.PriorityBinning: Determines how the system categorizes the importance of actors.

Optimization Logic

By default, the allocator assesses every character's UpdateRate and EvaluationRate. If you find the system is throttling characters too aggressively, you can mark specific actors as "Always Tick" by adjusting their MeshComponentUpdateFlag to AlwaysTickPose. However, use this sparingly, as it bypasses the budget control.

Instead of fighting the CPU usage of individual AnimBP nodes like BlendSpaces or Layered Blend per Bone, the Allocator ensures that even if you have hundreds of characters, the total impact on your frame time remains predictable. It effectively trades off "animation smoothness" for "frame rate consistency" when the scene complexity threatens your performance budget.

Key Takeaway: The Animation Budget Allocator allows you to set a fixed time-cost ceiling for your animation system, automatically scaling animation fidelity to protect your frame rate during high-density scenes.
