Deterministic Attribute Replication Techniques

Configure attribute set replication to ensure that critical gameplay values remain consistent and identical across all connected clients and the server.

In this lesson, you will learn how to configure your UAttributeSet to ensure that critical gameplay values remain perfectly synchronized across the server and all connected clients.

The Problem of Divergence

In a networked environment, attributes like Health, Stamina, or Mana are prone to state divergence if not managed strictly. If a client predicts a health change that the server later calculates differently, the player experiences "rubber-banding" or UI flickering. Deterministic replication relies on the GameplayEffect system to act as the single source of truth, ensuring that attribute modifications occur in the same order and result in identical final values on every machine.

Configuring Replication in C++

To enable this, your AttributeSet must properly implement the GetLifetimeReplicatedProps function. This tells Unreal’s networking layer to replicate these variables using the DOREPLIFETIME_CONDITION_NOTIFY macro, which ensures that whenever an attribute value changes on the server, the client is updated.

void UMyAttributeSet::GetLifetimeReplicatedProps(TArray<FLifetimeProperty>& OutLifetimeProps) const
{
    Super::GetLifetimeReplicatedProps(OutLifetimeProps);

    // Replicate the Health attribute to all clients
    DOREPLIFETIME_CONDITION_NOTIFY(UMyAttributeSet, Health, COND_None, REPNOTIFY_Always);
}

Ensuring Determinism

The core technique for determinism is using OnRep functions. When an attribute replicates from the server to the client, the OnRep function is triggered. You must use the GAMEPLAYATTRIBUTE_REPNOTIFY macro inside your attribute’s OnRep definition. This informs the GAS system that a change has occurred, allowing it to correctly handle the prediction reconciliation process and update any UI or visual components linked to that attribute.

By relying on the server to push these changes through the attribute replication pipeline rather than manually updating values via RPCs, you guarantee that every client arrives at the exact same attribute state, preventing gameplay desyncs. When the server applies a GameplayEffect, the modification is serialized and sent to all clients; the attribute system then validates this value against the local state, effectively "locking" the values in place across the network.

Key Takeaway: Deterministic attribute replication is achieved by binding your attributes to the GAS replication pipeline using DOREPLIFETIME_CONDITION_NOTIFY and GAMEPLAYATTRIBUTE_REPNOTIFY, ensuring the server remains the authoritative source for every modification.
