Optimizing Attribute Replication for Multiplayer

Configure GetLifetimeReplicatedProps to ensure attribute values are correctly synchronized across the network between the server and all connected clients.

In this lesson, you will learn how to configure GetLifetimeReplicatedProps to ensure your Gameplay Attributes remain perfectly synchronized across the network.

When working with the Gameplay Ability System (GAS), you define your stats in an AttributeSet. While GAS handles much of the heavy lifting, you must explicitly tell Unreal Engine how to replicate these specific floating-point values so that all clients see the same Health, Mana, or Stamina values as the server.

The Role of GetLifetimeReplicatedProps

In your AttributeSet C++ file, you implement GetLifetimeReplicatedProps just like you would for any other UObject. However, because GAS uses a specialized internal structure, you must register each attribute to replicate using the DOREPLIFETIME_CONDITION_NOTIFY macro. This macro ensures that when a value changes, the server broadcasts the update to relevant clients, and the OnRep notify function is triggered locally to update the UI or internal state.

Here is how you implement it for a standard attribute:

void UMyAttributeSet::GetLifetimeReplicatedProps(TArray<FLifetimeProperty>& OutLifetimeProps) const
{
    Super::GetLifetimeReplicatedProps(OutLifetimeProps);

    // Replicate Health to all relevant clients
    DOREPLIFETIME_CONDITION_NOTIFY(UMyAttributeSet, Health, COND_None, REPNOTIFY_Always);

    // Replicate MaxHealth to all relevant clients
    DOREPLIFETIME_CONDITION_NOTIFY(UMyAttributeSet, MaxHealth, COND_None, REPNOTIFY_Always);
}

Why this matters

By using DOREPLIFETIME_CONDITION_NOTIFY, you provide the engine with a reliable path to synchronize data. The REPNOTIFY_Always parameter ensures that the OnRep_Health function is called on the client even if the value change happens to match the previous value, which is crucial for refreshing your HUD components accurately.

If you fail to register your attributes here, the server will update its own values correctly, but clients will remain stuck with the default values initialized at the start of the game, leading to desynchronization where a player might appear to have full health on their screen while the server sees them as defeated. Keeping this list clean and accurate is the foundation of a responsive multiplayer experience.

Key Takeaway: You must explicitly register every replicated attribute in GetLifetimeReplicatedProps using the DOREPLIFETIME_CONDITION_NOTIFY macro to ensure the server propagates state changes to connected clients.
