Detecting Overlaps with Overlap Multi-By-Channel

Use overlap detection queries to identify all objects currently within a specific volume without requiring a sweep trajectory.

In this lesson, you will learn how to detect multiple objects simultaneously within a static volume using OverlapMultiByChannel without needing a movement path.

The Concept of Static Queries

Up until now, we have mostly focused on "sweeps"—moving a shape from point A to point B to find collisions along that path. However, there are many gameplay scenarios, such as an explosion or a proximity sensor, where you simply need to ask: "What is currently touching this specific area?"

OverlapMultiByChannel allows you to define a shape (a sphere, box, or capsule) at a fixed location in the world and retrieve an array of every primitive component currently overlapping that shape.

Implementation

Because this query is not a movement-based sweep, it is extremely efficient for checking environmental states. You define the query using the world context, the shape’s parameters, and the specific collision channel you are interested in.

Here is how you would use it to detect all actors overlapping a sphere:

TArray<FOverlapResult> OverlapResults;
FCollisionShape MySphere = FCollisionShape::MakeSphere(250.0f);

bool bHasOverlap = GetWorld()->OverlapMultiByChannel(
    OverlapResults,
    GetActorLocation(),
    FQuat::Identity,
    ECC_GameTraceChannel1, // Your custom channel
    MySphere
);

if (bHasOverlap)
{
    for (const FOverlapResult& Result : OverlapResults)
    {
        AActor* OverlappedActor = Result.GetActor();
        // Process your detected actors here
    }
}

Why Use This Over Sweeps?

Unlike a sweep, which requires a start and end point, this function is purely positional. It doesn't care how an object entered the volume; it only cares that the object is there right now. This is perfect for "area-of-effect" logic, such as a grenade that damages everything within a radius the moment it detonates, or a trigger zone that detects all players standing inside it upon activation. By utilizing your custom trace channels, you ensure that you only process the objects that matter, keeping your performance optimized and your logic clean.

Key Takeaway: Use OverlapMultiByChannel for instantaneous, static area detection when you need to identify all objects within a specific shape without requiring a sweep trajectory.
