In this lesson, you will learn how to execute single-frame line traces to detect specific actors and retrieve precise hit locations to drive gameplay interactions.
The Logic of the Line Trace
A line trace is essentially a mathematical ray shot from a starting point to an ending point. When this ray intersects with the collision volume of an object, Unreal returns a FHitResult struct containing everything you need: which actor was hit, the specific impact location in world space, and even the surface normal of the collision.
To perform this in C++, we use LineTraceSingleByChannel. Unlike broad collision overlaps, a line trace is "precise" because it calculates the exact point of contact along the vector, allowing you to spawn a decal exactly where a player clicked or interact with a specific button on a complex machine.
Implementing the Trace
You must define a start point (usually the camera location) and an end point (the camera location plus the forward vector multiplied by a range). Here is how you execute this in your Character class:
FHitResult Hit;
FVector Start = CameraComponent->GetComponentLocation();
FVector End = Start + (CameraComponent->GetForwardVector() * InteractionRange);
// Execute the trace using our custom interaction channel
bool bHit = GetWorld()->LineTraceSingleByChannel(
Hit,
Start,
End,
ECC_GameTraceChannel1 // Our custom 'Interaction' channel
);
if (bHit && Hit.GetActor())
{
// Retrieve the precise impact point
FVector ImpactPoint = Hit.ImpactPoint;
// Trigger interaction logic on the hit actor
IInteractableInterface* Interactable = Cast<IInteractableInterface>(Hit.GetActor());
if (Interactable)
{
Interactable->Execute_OnInteract(Hit.GetActor(), ImpactPoint);
}
}
Why Use Single-Frame Traces?
By using single-frame traces, you avoid the overhead of ticking physics simulations or managing collision overlaps. The trace happens instantly during the execution of your logic, ensuring that your interactions are snappy and responsive. By targeting your specific ECC_GameTraceChannel1 (the interaction channel defined in previous lessons), you ensure the trace ignores walls, floors, or non-interactable scenery, keeping your performance costs low and your gameplay logic clean.
Key Takeaway: Precision line tracing transforms a simple "Is anything there?" query into a data-rich interaction that provides the exact spatial coordinates required for immersive gameplay mechanics.
