Implementing Authentication for Unique Player Identification

Use the Authentication service to sign in players anonymously and retrieve unique IDs required for multiplayer session tracking.

In this lesson, you will learn how to leverage the Unity Authentication service to generate persistent, unique Player IDs, ensuring your multiplayer server can reliably track users across sessions.

Why Anonymous Authentication Matters

When a player joins your game, the server needs more than just an IP address to manage their inventory, stats, or session state. IP addresses are volatile and can be shared by multiple users behind a single router. By implementing the Authentication service, you allow Unity to assign each player a PlayerId—a unique, persistent identifier (GUID) that remains constant even if the player closes the app and restarts.

Integrating Anonymous Sign-In

You don't need a complex login screen to provide a unique identity. The simplest approach is "Anonymous Authentication," where the service generates a local credential automatically upon game launch.

First, ensure you have the com.unity.services.authentication package installed and your project linked to the Unity Gaming Services dashboard. You can then trigger the authentication flow in your initialization logic:

using Unity.Services.Core;
using Unity.Services.Authentication;
using UnityEngine;

public class AuthManager : MonoBehaviour
{
    async void Start()
    {
        await UnityServices.InitializeAsync();

        // Sign in anonymously to retrieve a unique Player ID
        await AuthenticationService.Instance.SignInAnonymouslyAsync();

        Debug.Log($"Player signed in with ID: {AuthenticationService.Instance.PlayerId}");
    }
}

Using the PlayerID for Tracking

Once the player is signed in, AuthenticationService.Instance.PlayerId provides a string value unique to that specific Unity account or device instance. You can pass this ID to your NetworkManager or your custom server-side logic when a player connects.

When a player spawns or joins a session, you can use this ID to look up their persistent data in your backend (like a NetworkVariable storing their XP or gold). Because this ID is tied to the service’s backend rather than your local client memory, it provides a secure, consistent anchor for your multiplayer session management.

Key Takeaway: Anonymous Authentication provides a permanent, system-generated Player ID that is essential for correctly associating networked states and persistent data with the specific individual playing your game.
