Synchronizing Transform Data Across Clients

Utilize the NetworkTransform component to automatically replicate position, rotation, and scale updates from the server to all connected clients.

In this lesson, you will learn how to leverage the NetworkTransform component to automatically replicate spatial data—position, rotation, and scale—from the server to all connected clients in your multiplayer environment.

The Role of NetworkTransform

When you have dynamic objects like players, vehicles, or moving platforms, manual synchronization of coordinates via Remote Procedure Calls (RPCs) is inefficient and prone to jitter. The NetworkTransform component acts as an automated synchronization layer. It hooks into your object's Transform component and periodically observes changes to its state. When the server detects that the object has moved, it packages that spatial data and broadcasts it to all clients, ensuring everyone sees the object in the same location.

Implementation Setup

To use this, you must have a NetworkObject component attached to your GameObject. Once present, you can add NetworkTransform via the Inspector.

// Ensure the object has the required components
[RequireComponent(typeof(NetworkObject))]
[RequireComponent(typeof(NetworkTransform))]
public class SyncPlayerMovement : NetworkBehaviour
{
    // The NetworkTransform handles the replication automatically
    // by monitoring the Transform component for changes.
}

Critical Configuration

Inside the NetworkTransform component, you will see checkboxes for "Sync Position," "Sync Rotation," and "Sync Scale." It is best practice to enable only what is necessary for the object to reduce bandwidth usage. For example, a stationary barrel may only need position synchronization, while a physics-based character might require both position and rotation.

Because you are using an authoritative server model, the server acts as the "source of truth." When a client moves a character, they send an input request to the server, the server updates the Transform position, and the NetworkTransform then distributes that updated position to all other clients. This prevents cheating and keeps the game world consistent across different latencies.

Key Takeaway: The NetworkTransform component abstracts the complexity of state replication by automatically broadcasting your GameObject’s spatial changes from the authoritative server to all connected clients.
