Configuring Custom Editor Layouts

Learners will be able to rearrange and save custom workspace layouts to optimize their personal workflow and increase development efficiency.

In this lesson, you will learn how to rearrange and save custom workspace layouts to optimize your development speed and keep your workspace tidy.

Why Customize Your Layout?

When you first open a Unity project, you’ll see the default arrangement of windows like the Scene, Game, Hierarchy, and Inspector. While this is a great starting point, every developer works differently. Some prefer having the Inspector on the left, while others like the Game view to be massive to preview their work more clearly. By customizing your layout, you turn the Editor into a tool that works for you, rather than you working around it.

Moving Windows

Rearranging your workspace is as simple as clicking and dragging. Every window in Unity has a small tab at the top. You can click this tab and drag the window to any edge or corner of another window.

  • Dragging to the middle of a panel will turn it into a tab.
  • Dragging to the edges of a panel will "dock" it, splitting the space so both windows are visible at the same time.

Feel free to move things around until your most-used windows are exactly where your eyes naturally fall.

Saving Your Personal Layout

Once you have created a layout that feels perfect for your workflow, you don’t want to lose it! Unity allows you to save these configurations so you can switch back to them instantly.

  1. Look at the top-right corner of the Unity Editor for the Layout dropdown menu (it usually says "Default").
  2. Click it and select Save Layout...
  3. Give your layout a name (like "My Efficient Workspace") and click Save.

Now, if you accidentally drag a window to the wrong place or your workspace gets messy, you can simply open that dropdown menu again and select your saved layout to restore it instantly. You can save multiple layouts for different tasks, such as one layout optimized for Level Design and another for Scripting.

Key Takeaway: You can drag and drop Unity windows to customize your workspace and save those arrangements in the Layout dropdown menu to maximize your productivity.
