Utilizing Scene Layers for Visibility Management

Assign GameObjects to specific layers to control rendering, collision detection, and scene view visibility for better workflow management.

In this lesson, you will learn how to leverage Unity Layers to clean up your workspace and control which objects appear during your design process.

Why Use Layers?

As your project grows, your Scene View can become cluttered with UI elements, background props, or invisible triggers, making it difficult to select the specific objects you need to edit. By assigning GameObjects to specific Layers, you can toggle their visibility in the Scene View, allowing you to focus on exactly what you are building without distractions.

How to Assign a Layer

Every GameObject has a Layer dropdown menu at the top of its Inspector window. By default, most objects are set to the Default layer. You can select an existing layer or choose "Add Layer..." to create custom categories, such as "Environment," "UI," or "Enemies."

Managing Visibility

Once your objects are assigned to layers, look at the top right of your Scene View window. You will see a button labeled Layers. Clicking this opens a dropdown list containing all your project’s layers.

Each layer has a small "eye" icon next to it. Clicking the eye icon toggles the visibility of every object assigned to that layer:

  • Visible (Eye open): The object is rendered in the Scene View.
  • Hidden (Eye closed): The object is hidden from the Scene View, making it easier to select items behind it or view specific parts of your level geometry.

Note: This visibility control is only for your workflow in the Editor. It does not affect how the game renders during Play Mode.

Practical Workflow Tip

If you are working on a dense level, try placing all your background decoration objects on a specific layer called "Background." When you need to adjust your player character or pathing, simply hide the "Background" layer using the Scene View dropdown. This clears the clutter instantly, allows you to click on your game entities with precision, and helps you maintain focus on the task at hand.

Key Takeaway: Use the Layer dropdown in the Scene View to toggle the visibility of specific object groups, allowing you to hide distracting scene elements and streamline your editing workflow.
