Automating Style Linting

Implement linters that enforce project-specific layout and spacing standards automatically.

In this lesson, you will learn how to automate the enforcement of your design system’s layout and spacing rules using linting tools to prevent visual drift.

When working on complex layouts, it is easy for developers to accidentally introduce "magic numbers"—values like margin: 13 or padding: 27—that break your carefully architected design tokens. Rather than manually auditing every file for these discrepancies, we use Stylelint (or ESLint plugins like eslint-plugin-react-native) to automatically catch layout violations as you write code.

The Role of Automated Linting

Automated linting acts as a silent guardian for your layout integrity. By configuring specific rules, you can force the codebase to reject styles that don't adhere to your established spacing system. For example, if your design tokens specify that all margins must be multiples of 8px, you can configure a rule to flag any other value.

Implementing Spacing Constraints

You can add custom linting rules to your .eslintrc file to enforce your spacing standards. If you want to prevent developers from using arbitrary numbers for layout properties, your configuration might look like this:

"rules": {
  "react-native/no-unused-styles": 2,
  "no-restricted-syntax": [
    "error",
    {
      "selector": "Property[key.name=/^(margin|padding)/] Literal[value!=/^(4|8|16|24|32)$/]",
      "message": "Only use approved design token values (4, 8, 16, 24, 32) for layout spacing."
    }
  ]
}

By defining these constraints, your IDE will immediately highlight a margin: 10 as an error, providing a real-time feedback loop. This ensures that every developer on your team maintains the visual consistency you’ve worked hard to establish, without you needing to play "layout police" during code reviews.

By automating these checks, you transform your documentation and design tokens from mere suggestions into technical requirements that the machine enforces. This eliminates "visual debt" before it ever makes it into your build.

Key Takeaway: Automating style linting turns your design system’s spacing and layout constraints into enforceable code rules that catch non-compliant styles before they reach production.
