Responsive Grid Overlays

Build development-only grid overlays to ensure alignment perfection during the design phase.

In this lesson, you will learn how to build a development-only grid overlay to visually verify your alignment and spacing against your design specs.

Why Use Overlays?

When building pixel-perfect interfaces, relying on your eyes alone can be deceptive. A Responsive Grid Overlay acts like the "Show Grid" feature in design tools like Figma or Sketch. By layering a semi-transparent grid over your application during development, you can immediately spot misaligned elements, inconsistent margins, or off-center components without checking individual stylesheet values.

Building the Overlay

The goal is to create a component that sits on top of your entire screen, ignoring pointer events so you can still interact with the UI beneath it. We use pointerEvents="none" to ensure the overlay doesn't block your taps.

const GridOverlay = () => {
  if (!__DEV__) return null; // Only show in development mode

  return (
    <View style={styles.overlayContainer} pointerEvents="none">
      {Array.from({ length: 12 }).map((_, i) => (
        <View key={i} style={styles.gridColumn} />
      ))}
    </View>
  );
};

const styles = StyleSheet.create({
  overlayContainer: {
    ...StyleSheet.absoluteFillObject,
    flexDirection: 'row',
    justifyContent: 'space-between',
    paddingHorizontal: 16,
  },
  gridColumn: {
    width: 20,
    backgroundColor: 'rgba(255, 0, 0, 0.1)',
    height: '100%',
  },
});

Pro-Tip: Conditional Rendering

The most important part of this pattern is the if (!__DEV__) return null; check. This ensures your grid is "invisible" to your production builds, keeping your performance metrics clean and your users away from your development tools.

You can place this GridOverlay component at the very bottom of your root layout or within a specific screen wrapper. Because it uses StyleSheet.absoluteFillObject, it will sit perfectly on top of your existing content, allowing you to drag your components into place until they align perfectly with your vertical columns.

Key Takeaway: A development-only grid overlay acts as a visual contract that ensures every component aligns with your design system's rhythm without affecting your production UI.
