In this lesson, you will learn how to leverage the WebAuthn standard to enable passwordless biometric authentication for your ASP.NET Core applications.
Moving Beyond Passwords with WebAuthn
While we have previously covered Two-Factor Authentication and Managing User Registration, traditional methods still rely on "something you know" (passwords). WebAuthn (Web Authentication API) shifts this paradigm by using public-key cryptography to verify identity via biometrics, like a fingerprint scanner or facial recognition, built directly into the user's device.
The process involves two main phases: Registration and Assertion.
- Registration: The server sends a challenge to the browser. The browser interacts with the device's hardware (e.g., Windows Hello or TouchID) to generate a public/private key pair. The server stores the public key linked to the user's account.
- Assertion (Authentication): When the user logs in, the server sends a new challenge. The device uses the stored private key to sign that challenge (only after a successful biometric scan). The server then verifies this signature against the stored public key.
Implementation Concept
In an ASP.NET Core environment, you don't typically handle the raw cryptographic handshake manually. Instead, you integrate libraries that facilitate the communication between the browser's navigator.credentials API and your identity store.
A simplified conceptual flow for verifying an authentication attempt looks like this:
// Conceptual verification of a biometric assertion
public async Task<bool> VerifyBiometricSignature(byte[] clientData, byte[] signature, byte[] publicKey)
{
// The server verifies the signature using the stored public key
// This confirms the user physically performed the biometric check
return await _cryptoProvider.VerifySignatureAsync(publicKey, clientData, signature);
}
By decoupling the authentication secret from the server, you eliminate the risk of credential theft via phishing or database leaks. Because the biometric data never leaves the user’s device hardware, you adhere to high security standards while drastically improving the user experience compared to traditional OTP codes or complex passwords.
Key Takeaway: WebAuthn allows you to replace knowledge-based secrets with hardware-backed public-key cryptography, verifying user identity through biometric challenges that are cryptographically bound to your specific application.
