Generating Ecosystems with Procedural Foliage Volumes

You will configure procedural foliage volumes to automatically distribute vegetation density and variety across landscapes based on specific environmental constraints and rules.

In this lesson, you will learn how to automate the complex distribution of vegetation across your landscape using Procedural Foliage Volumes to define biologically plausible ecosystems.

Instead of hand-placing thousands of instances, Procedural Foliage Volumes rely on Procedural Foliage Spawner (PFS) assets. These spawners act as the "rulebook" for your ecosystem. By defining a collection of FoliageType assets within a spawner, you can assign unique growth requirements to each plant, such as slope angles, height ranges, or proximity to other species.

Setting Up Environmental Constraints

The core of the system lies in the FoliageType configuration. When you open a Foliage Type asset, the Procedural settings allow you to dictate how a plant interacts with the world:

  • Density: Controls how many instances appear per square meter.
  • Placement Rules: You can set the Minimum and Maximum Slope Angle to ensure alpine flora only grows on steep cliffs, while tall grasses prefer flat meadows.
  • Collision: By adjusting the Collision Radius, you prevent assets from overlapping, effectively creating "competition" for space.
  • Growth Order: The system simulates natural distribution; species with higher priority or specific density settings will occupy space first, creating natural clusters.

Implementation Workflow

To deploy this, drop a ProceduralFoliageVolume into your level, scale it to cover your target area, and assign your ProceduralFoliageSpawner in the volume’s details panel. Once assigned, you can trigger the generation using the Resimulate button.

For example, if you are building a forest, you might add a "Tree" FoliageType with a large radius and high shade requirements, followed by "Ferns" that have a Placement Density calibrated to grow only in the shaded areas defined by the trees. The engine handles the math to ensure the trees aren't floating and the ferns aren't clipping into tree trunks.

By defining these parameters, you create a self-regulating ecosystem that updates whenever you adjust your landscape height or modify the spawner rules.

Key Takeaway: Procedural Foliage Volumes turn landscape distribution into a rule-based simulation, allowing you to generate dense, ecologically accurate vegetation by balancing collision constraints and environmental placement filters.
