In this lesson, you will learn how to drive precise, material-aware footstep audio by passing dynamic surface data from Animation Notifies directly into your MetaSound graph.
The Problem: Timing vs. Texture
Triggering a sound on a footstep is easy, but ensuring the audio matches the surface—whether it’s wood, grass, or metal—requires bridging the gap between your Animation Blueprint and the MetaSound graph. By utilizing Animation Notifies (AnimNotifies), we can send a "surface type" parameter at the exact moment the foot makes contact with the ground, ensuring the audio engine reacts before the listener perceives a lag.
Implementation Logic
The workflow relies on an Audio Component attached to your character. When you place an AnimNotify in your animation sequence, you call a Blueprint function that updates the MetaSound parameter before triggering the play command.
- MetaSound Setup: Create a
StringorIntinput parameter in your MetaSound (e.g.,SurfaceType) that drives aSelectnode to switch between different wave players or sample arrays. - Animation Notify: Create an
AnimNotifyclass or use a generic one that includes a data field for your surface type. - The Blueprint Link: Inside the Animation Blueprint (or the Character Blueprint via an Event), use the
Set Trigger ParameterorSet Float Parameternode on your Audio Component.
// Logic flow inside the AnimNotify event
void UMyAnimNotify_Footstep::Notify(USkeletalMeshComponent* MeshComp, ...) {
UAudioComponent* AudioComp = MeshComp->GetOwner()->FindComponentByClass<UAudioComponent>();
if (AudioComp) {
// Set the parameter to tell MetaSound which material to play
AudioComp->SetStringParameter(FName("SurfaceType"), CurrentSurfaceName);
// Trigger the sound
AudioComp->Play();
}
}
By setting the parameter immediately before the Play command, you guarantee the audio logic processes the correct surface material during the synthesis phase, avoiding "skipped" frames or mismatched audio layers. Because MetaSounds operate on a low-latency render thread, this alignment provides a seamless auditory experience that feels tightly coupled to the visual animation frames.
Key Takeaway: Always update your MetaSound parameters immediately before or simultaneously with the trigger event to ensure the synthesis engine evaluates the correct state for that specific animation frame.
