Lesson 557 of 8807. Visual Fidelity and RenderingFree lesson

Automating Quality Levels with Device Profiles

This lesson covers how to use device profiles to automatically adjust engine rendering features based on the detected hardware capabilities.

In this lesson, you will learn how to leverage Device Profiles to automatically scale your game’s visual fidelity to match the specific hardware capabilities of your players' devices.

Understanding Device Profiles

While manual Scalability Settings allow players to adjust graphics, Device Profiles act as the "brain" that sets the default baseline for hardware. Instead of forcing a user to manually configure settings, Unreal Engine uses these profiles to identify the hardware (like a specific mobile GPU or desktop graphics card) and automatically apply appropriate quality presets upon launch.

These profiles live in your project’s DefaultDeviceProfiles.ini file. They are hierarchical, meaning you can set a "base" profile for all devices and then create overrides for specific categories, such as Android_High or Windows.

Configuring the Logic

To see this in action, navigate to Window > Developer Tools > Device Profiles. Here, you can select a profile and modify specific CVars (Console Variables). For instance, if you want to ensure your high-end volumetric fog effects—which we optimized in previous lessons—are disabled on low-end mobile devices to maintain a consistent frame rate, you can set the following:

[Android_Low DeviceProfile]
+CVars=r.VolumetricFog=0
+CVars=r.ViewDistanceScale=0.5

When the game launches, the engine detects the hardware, selects the most relevant profile, and executes these commands automatically. This prevents "bad first impressions" where a user with low-end hardware experiences unplayable frame rates because the game defaulted to "Epic" settings.

Why This Matters

By automating these levels, you move the burden of optimization from the player to the engine. You ensure that users with top-tier hardware get the full visual experience of your Sky Atmosphere and Lumen setups, while users on mobile or older desktops receive a performance-friendly configuration that preserves the game’s core functionality. By combining these profiles with the profiling techniques we covered earlier (like GPU Visualizer), you can create tiered experiences that maximize fidelity without sacrificing stability.

Key Takeaway: Device Profiles automate the application of performance presets at startup, ensuring your game automatically detects hardware tiers and adjusts rendering features to provide the best possible balance between visual fidelity and frame rate for every player.
