Implementing Camera Transitions Using Virtual Cameras

You will orchestrate seamless camera cuts and blends between different viewpoints to improve the narrative flow of gameplay sequences.

In this lesson, you will learn how to orchestrate seamless narrative flow by managing priority-based blends between multiple Cinemachine Virtual Cameras.

At this advanced stage of development, you aren't just moving a camera; you are directing a cinematic sequence. The core concept behind seamless transitions in Cinemachine is the Priority system. Every Virtual Camera has a Priority integer; the camera with the highest value is the "live" camera that the Brain renders to the main screen.

When you change the priority of one camera to be higher than the current one, the CinemachineBrain component on your Main Camera automatically triggers a transition. To make these transitions cinematic rather than jarring cuts, you configure the Blend Hint settings on the Brain.

Orchestrating the Transition

You can trigger these shifts via code based on game events, such as a player entering a trigger volume or finishing an objective. Instead of manually moving objects, simply toggle the Priority property:

public CinemachineVirtualCamera cinematicCam;

public void PlaySequence()
{
    // Boosting priority makes this camera active and triggers the Brain's blend
    cinematicCam.Priority = 20;
}

To control the "feel" of the transition, select your CM vcam and look at the Lens settings, or adjust the Default Blend on the CinemachineBrain. By setting the blend to "Ease In/Out" or "Custom Curve," you turn a simple point-of-view shift into a smooth, professional camera sweep.

Remember, these transitions respect the post-processing profiles attached to each virtual camera. If one camera has a heavy Vignette (from our earlier lesson) and the other does not, the CinemachineBrain will interpolate those volume properties during the blend, creating a sophisticated visual shift that guides the player’s eye exactly where you want it.

Key Takeaway: By manipulating the Priority of Virtual Cameras, you leverage the CinemachineBrain to perform complex, interpolated transitions, allowing you to direct the player's perspective with cinematic precision.
