Selecting a Pipeline Based on Platform Targets

Match your specific hardware performance constraints and target device requirements with the appropriate Unity rendering pipeline for optimal frame rates.

In this lesson, you will learn how to align your project’s rendering pipeline choice with your target hardware’s performance profile to ensure optimal frame rates.

As we move into the visual phase of development, it is vital to remember that not all platforms are built the same. A pipeline is essentially the "engine" that dictates how your game translates data into pixels. Choosing the wrong one can lead to severe thermal throttling on mobile devices or underutilized power on high-end PCs.

The Pipeline Decision Matrix

  • Universal Render Pipeline (URP): This is your primary choice for mobile, VR, and cross-platform titles. Because it uses a "Single-Pass" architecture, it minimizes draw calls and memory overhead. If your target is an Android or iOS device with limited thermal headroom, URP’s highly scalable nature allows you to toggle features like shadows, post-processing, and lighting complexity via Render Pipeline Assets to keep performance smooth.
  • High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP): Designed exclusively for hardware with significant graphical muscle, such as high-end PCs and consoles. HDRP utilizes a "Clustered Forward" or "Deferred" rendering path, which handles high-fidelity lighting and complex materials at the cost of higher base overhead. Using HDRP on a low-end mobile chip will almost guarantee frame drops, regardless of how much you try to optimize your assets.
  • Built-in Pipeline: While largely considered a legacy path, it remains useful for extremely simple 2D projects or specific older hardware constraints where you need complete manual control over every render queue.

Practical Workflow

When targeting multiple platforms, you don't necessarily need to change the entire pipeline, but you must swap the QualitySettings or the assigned Render Pipeline Asset dynamically based on the build target. You can check the current platform using:

#if UNITY_ANDROID || UNITY_IOS
    // Assign a lightweight URP asset optimized for mobile
    QualitySettings.renderPipeline = mobilePipelineAsset;
#elif UNITY_STANDALONE_WIN
    // Assign a high-fidelity HDRP asset
    QualitySettings.renderPipeline = pcPipelineAsset;
#endif

By prioritizing URP for mobile’s restricted memory and HDRP for PC’s computational density, you ensure the GPU is never doing more work than the hardware is designed to handle.

Key Takeaway: Choose URP for its efficient, scalable architecture on mobile/VR, and reserve HDRP for high-end platforms where graphical fidelity is limited only by the GPU’s capacity.
