In this lesson, you will learn how to orchestrate a reliable startup sequence to ensure essential systems are ready before your gameplay logic fires.
The Problem: The Race Condition
In a complex project, Awake() and Start() calls are notoriously non-deterministic. If your InventoryManager tries to load data in Awake() but relies on the DatabaseService being ready, you risk a NullReferenceException if the DatabaseService hasn't finished its own initialization yet. Relying on Unity’s "Script Execution Order" settings is brittle; instead, we want to enforce an explicit, dependency-aware startup chain.
Implementing a Bootstrapper
Rather than letting every manager self-initialize, we create a GameBootstrapper. This class acts as a central coordinator that forces a specific, linear flow of initialization.
public class GameBootstrapper : MonoBehaviour
{
[SerializeField] private DatabaseService database;
[SerializeField] private InventoryManager inventory;
private async void Awake()
{
// 1. Initialize core infrastructure first
await database.InitializeAsync();
// 2. Now that the DB is ready, initialize dependent systems
inventory.Initialize(database);
Debug.Log("Initialization Sequence Complete.");
}
}
Why This Works
By moving away from implicit Awake() calls, you gain full control over the lifecycle. In this pattern, dependent managers shouldn't hold logic that runs in Awake(). Instead, they expose an Initialize() method (or an InitializeAsync() if data loading is involved) that accepts their required dependencies as arguments. This not only solves the timing issue but also makes your dependencies explicit, improving testability and code clarity.
If a manager needs the DatabaseService, it no longer searches for it; it is provided with it during the controlled boot sequence. This approach prevents "manager spaghetti" where systems scramble to find each other during the first frame of gameplay. By building a synchronous chain, you transform the chaotic startup phase into a robust, predictable process that scales as your architecture grows.
Key Takeaway: Replace implicit, non-deterministic Awake() logic with a centralized Bootstrapper that forces dependencies to initialize in a predefined, logical order.
