Configuring Humanoid Animation Rigs

You will map character bone structures to Unity's Humanoid Avatar system to enable cross-character animation retargeting.

In this lesson, you will learn how to map your 3D character’s bone structure to Unity’s Humanoid Avatar system, allowing you to share animations across different character models.

Why Humanoid Avatars?

In Unity, a "Generic" rig treats every bone as an individual piece of data, meaning an animation made for a robot won't work on a human model. By switching to a "Humanoid" rig, Unity interprets the skeleton as a standard human structure (hips, spine, arms, legs, etc.). Once mapped, Unity’s animation engine handles the math to retarget the motion, meaning any animation compatible with the Humanoid system will automatically work on your character.

Configuring the Rig

To set this up, select your 3D model file in the Project window and navigate to the Rig tab in the Inspector:

  1. Animation Type: Change this from "Generic" to Humanoid.
  2. Avatar Definition: Set this to Create From This Model.
  3. Configure: Click the Configure button.

This opens the Avatar Configuration window. Here, you will see a list of human body parts. You must ensure the bones in your character’s hierarchy match these slots. Unity will attempt an "Auto-map," but you should always verify that the hips, chest, and limbs are assigned correctly to your character’s specific bone names.

If you see green checkmarks, the bones are correctly identified. If they appear red, you may need to drag and drop the correct bone from your character hierarchy into the corresponding slot.

Testing the Mapping

Once finished, click Apply and Done. Now, when you drag your character into the scene and add an Animator component, you can drag and drop a standard Humanoid animation file into the Controller slot. Because the bone structures are now mapped to a common standard, the character will perform the animation regardless of their unique scale or proportions.

Key Takeaway: Converting your rig to a Humanoid Avatar creates a universal bone-mapping standard that enables your character to inherit any animation designed for the Unity Humanoid system, saving you the effort of animating every character from scratch.
