The Impact of Layout Animations on UI Thread

You will be able to use LayoutAnimation API to offload simple visual changes to the UI thread, bypassing the bridge.

In this lesson, you will learn how the LayoutAnimation API allows you to trigger smooth visual updates by moving the heavy lifting away from the JavaScript bridge and directly onto the UI thread.

The Bottleneck: The Bridge

In a standard React Native flow, when you change a component's state, that instruction travels across the "bridge" from your JavaScript code to the native platform. For complex layout changes—like moving an element or resizing a view—if the bridge gets congested with constant updates, your UI will stutter, causing "jank" or dropped frames.

Offloading to the UI Thread

LayoutAnimation is a special tool that works differently. Instead of sending a stream of coordinate updates from JavaScript to the native side, you essentially tell the native side, "Whatever layout change happens next, animate it automatically."

When you call LayoutAnimation.configureNext(), you are instructing the native UI manager to take over the animation entirely. Because the native layer already knows the final state of your layout, it calculates the frames of the animation locally on the UI thread without asking JavaScript for help every 16 milliseconds.

A Quick Example

Imagine you want to fade or slide a view into place when its size changes. You simply trigger the animation right before updating your state:

import { LayoutAnimation, View, TouchableOpacity } from 'react-native';

const toggleView = () => {
  // Tell the native layer to animate the next layout change
  LayoutAnimation.configureNext(LayoutAnimation.Presets.easeInEaseOut);

  // Update state to trigger a layout change
  setExpanded(!expanded);
};

Because this logic is offloaded to the native platform, the animation remains buttery smooth even if your JavaScript thread is temporarily busy processing other data or logic. It bypasses the bridge's communication delay, ensuring the user sees a fluid response. This is a powerful way to keep your app feeling premium, even on lower-end hardware where the JavaScript thread might struggle to keep up with intense UI updates.

Key Takeaway: By using LayoutAnimation, you offload animation calculations to the native UI thread, bypassing the JavaScript bridge and ensuring silky-smooth performance even when the main app logic is busy.
