Custom Request Context Providers

Extend the default request object with domain-specific helpers for handler convenience.

In this lesson, you will learn how to enrich the native Express req object with domain-specific helper methods to simplify your route handler logic.

The Problem: Repetitive Request Logic

As your application grows, you often find yourself repeating the same data retrieval patterns across multiple controllers. For example, verifying a user's subscription tier or formatting a specific database response. Instead of writing this logic inside every route handler, we can "extend" the request object.

A Custom Request Context Provider is a middleware function that injects domain-specific helpers directly into the req object. This makes your handlers cleaner, more readable, and significantly more maintainable.

Implementing a Context Provider

Think of this as creating a "toolkit" that travels with every incoming request. By attaching these helpers to req, any downstream handler gains immediate access to them.

// A middleware that attaches a helper to the request
const userContextMiddleware = (req, res, next) => {
  // We attach a helper method to 'req'
  req.getUserSubscription = () => {
    // Domain logic: determining if the user is a 'premium' tier
    return req.user.tier === 'gold' ? 'premium' : 'standard';
  };

  next();
};

// In your route handler
app.get('/dashboard', userContextMiddleware, (req, res) => {
  const status = req.getUserSubscription(); // Clean and simple!
  res.send(`Your status is: ${status}`);
});

Why Use This?

  1. Encapsulation: If the logic for "what defines a premium user" changes, you only update the middleware, not every single route handler.
  2. Context-Awareness: Because these helpers live on the req object, they automatically have access to the data already stored there (like req.user or req.tenantId), creating a seamless bridge between your middleware and your business logic.
  3. Handler Clarity: Your route handlers focus on flow and response, while the "heavy lifting" of domain-specific data transformation is hidden behind these convenient helpers.

By offloading repetitive domain logic to context providers, you transform the generic req object into a powerful, application-specific tool that knows exactly how to handle your business domain.

Key Takeaway: Custom Request Context Providers allow you to move domain-specific logic into middleware, transforming the generic req object into a simplified API that makes your route handlers cleaner and easier to maintain.
