Dynamic Route Parameter Capture

Build a regex-based engine to map dynamic URL paths to specific controller functions.

In this lesson, you will learn how to build a regex-based engine that captures dynamic segments from a URL path to map them to specific controller functions.

The Problem with Static Routing

So far, we have mapped fixed paths (like /users) to handlers. But what about /users/123 or /products/shoes? Hardcoding every possible URL would be impossible. We need a way to define a "template" path, such as /users/:id, and automatically extract the 123 as a variable.

Building the Regex Engine

To do this, we convert a path template into a Regular Expression. We replace parts starting with : with a capture group.

For example, the pattern /users/:id becomes the regex /^\/users\/([^/]+)$/. The ([^/]+) part tells the engine to match any character that isn't a slash, and capture it.

Here is how you can implement this in your Node.js server:

const routes = [
  {
    pattern: /^\/users\/([^/]+)$/,
    handler: (params) => `Fetching user with ID: ${params[0]}`
  }
];

function handleRequest(url) {
  for (const route of routes) {
    const match = url.match(route.pattern);
    if (match) {
      // match[0] is the full path, match[1...] are the captures
      return route.handler(match.slice(1));
    }
  }
  return "404 Not Found";
}

console.log(handleRequest("/users/123")); // "Fetching user with ID: 123"

Why Regex?

Using RegExp allows us to define flexible routing rules without importing heavy frameworks. By defining a mapping where tokens like :id are replaced by ([^/]+), we transform an incoming string like /users/42 into an array of parameters. The controller function then receives these parameters directly, keeping your logic clean and decoupled from the raw HTTP path.

As you build this, ensure your regex handles edge cases, such as trailing slashes or multiple parameters (e.g., /users/:uid/posts/:pid), to keep your router robust.

Key Takeaway: Dynamic route parameter capture uses regular expression groups to identify variable segments in a URL path and pass them as structured arguments to your controller functions.
