Implementing Feature-Flag Security

Ensure that administrative features are not inadvertently exposed via uncontrolled feature toggles.

In this lesson, you will learn how to prevent administrative privilege escalation by decoupling feature-flag state management from the authorization layer.

Feature flags are powerful tools for incremental rollouts, but they introduce a significant security risk: if your application logic relies solely on a boolean flag to unlock sensitive administrative routes, you may inadvertently expose backend controls to unauthorized users. A common mistake is to verify the existence of a flag while neglecting the identity of the requester.

The "Gatekeeper" Pattern

Never treat a feature flag as an implicit permission slip. Even if enable-admin-dashboard is set to true globally, that toggle only grants access to the code, not the authority. You must enforce an Authorization Guard that checks the user's role after verifying the flag is enabled.

Consider this vulnerable approach:

// DANGEROUS: Authorization is missing
app.get('/admin/delete-database', async (req, res) => {
  if (featureFlags.isEnabled('admin-delete-feature')) {
    await database.wipe(); // Anyone can trigger this if the flag is ON!
  }
});

To secure this, you must treat the flag as a prerequisite, but the session role as the ultimate arbiter:

// SECURE: Flag and Role are both validated
app.get('/admin/delete-database', authorize('admin'), async (req, res) => {
  if (!featureFlags.isEnabled('admin-delete-feature')) {
    return res.status(404).send('Feature unavailable');
  }
  await database.wipe();
});

Decoupling Toggle Configurations

Furthermore, ensure your feature-flag service configuration is stored in a secure environment—ideally, one that requires specific administrative credentials to modify. If an attacker can manipulate your flag provider's API, they can toggle "administrative" features for their own session. Always treat your feature-flag management dashboard with the same security rigor as your production database credentials. By separating the toggle state from the access control list, you ensure that a misconfigured or compromised flag cannot turn a regular user into a superuser.

Key Takeaway: A feature flag should only control the availability of a feature, while your existing authorization framework must always validate that the current user has the required permissions to execute it.
