Building an Internal Health Check Endpoint

Develop deep-check health endpoints that verify connectivity to critical downstream dependencies.

In this lesson, you will learn how to design a deep-check health endpoint that validates your application's ability to communicate with critical downstream dependencies.

While a "shallow" health check simply returns 200 OK to signal that the Node.js event loop is spinning, a "deep" health check ensures that your infrastructure—such as databases, Redis clusters, or external APIs—is actually reachable and responding. Relying solely on shallow checks can lead to "zombie" instances that appear healthy to load balancers but fail to process business logic due to disconnected database pools.

Implementing the Deep Check

To implement this, you create an endpoint (typically /health/ready) that executes connectivity tests. You should treat these checks as asynchronous operations that aggregate the state of all vital subsystems.

async function deepHealthCheck() {
  const dbStatus = await database.ping();
  const redisStatus = await redis.ping();

  const isHealthy = dbStatus && redisStatus;

  return {
    status: isHealthy ? 'UP' : 'DOWN',
    details: {
      database: dbStatus ? 'connected' : 'disconnected',
      redis: redisStatus ? 'connected' : 'disconnected'
    }
  };
}

Strategic Considerations

When designing these endpoints, keep three principles in mind:

  1. Avoid Cascading Failures: Do not cache health check results for too long, but be mindful of the overhead. If your health check triggers a massive query, you might inadvertently perform a Denial of Service (DoS) attack on your own database during a traffic spike.
  2. Standardize the Schema: Use the structured data format you developed in the logging modules. If your health check fails, log the specific dependency failure with the appropriate log level (e.g., error) so your aggregation tools can trigger alerts based on the details field.
  3. Internal Only: Because these endpoints expose the state of your internal infrastructure, ensure they are not reachable from the public internet. Use your API gateway or security groups to restrict access to internal monitoring tools or Kubernetes liveness/readiness probes.

By verifying dependencies, you transform your health checks from simple "is the process alive" signals into reliable indicators of operational readiness.

Key Takeaway: A deep-check health endpoint validates system integrity by actively testing connectivity to critical dependencies, ensuring the application is truly prepared to handle requests.
