Managing Traffic with Traefik Ingress

Deploy Traefik as an alternative Ingress controller to leverage its dynamic configuration capabilities and built-in service discovery features.

In this lesson, you will learn how to deploy Traefik as a high-performance alternative to the standard NGINX Ingress controller to leverage its dynamic configuration capabilities and native service discovery.

Moving Beyond Static Routing

While you are already familiar with the NGINX Ingress controller, Traefik offers a different approach to traffic management. Unlike NGINX, which often requires a full reload of its configuration files whenever a new service or rule is added, Traefik is built to be "cloud-native." It continuously monitors the Kubernetes API server, meaning it automatically detects new services, deployments, and Ingress resources as they appear without needing to restart its process.

Why Traefik?

Traefik excels in dynamic environments. Because it integrates directly with the Kubernetes API, it can observe your cluster state in real-time. This makes it an ideal choice if you frequently deploy new services or require complex routing logic that can be updated on-the-fly without dropping active connections.

Deploying Traefik

When you deploy Traefik in Kubernetes, you typically install it via a Helm chart. It acts as an IngressController that reads your standard Ingress resource definitions but handles the internal routing logic using its own modern engine. A simple Ingress rule for Traefik looks exactly like the ones you’ve already mastered, ensuring compatibility with your existing manifests:

apiVersion: networking.k8s.io/v1
kind: Ingress
metadata:
  name: my-app-ingress
  annotations:
    kubernetes.io/ingress.class: traefik
spec:
  rules:
  - host: app.example.com
    http:
      paths:
      - path: /
        pathType: Prefix
        backend:
          service:
            name: my-service
            port:
              number: 80

By setting the kubernetes.io/ingress.class annotation (or using the ingressClassName field in newer versions) to traefik, you instruct the Traefik controller to take ownership of that rule. It will then dynamically update its internal routing table, pointing your external traffic to the correct backend pods as they scale or shift across the cluster.

Key Takeaway: Traefik enhances your cluster’s traffic management by providing a self-healing, dynamic routing layer that eliminates the need for manual configuration reloads when your application landscape changes.
