Grouping and Aggregation Strategies

You will use pre-aggregation or specific aggregation algorithms to reduce latency for reporting.

In this lesson, you will learn how to optimize high-latency reporting queries by utilizing pre-aggregation strategies to avoid redundant full-table scans.

When dealing with massive datasets, performing complex GROUP BY operations on the fly can become a major performance bottleneck. Every time a user requests a dashboard metric, the database engine must scan millions of rows, perform sorting or hashing, and then calculate the aggregate—this is a classic recipe for high latency.

The Strategy: Pre-Aggregation

Instead of calculating aggregates at query time, we can maintain "summary tables" or utilize materialized views to perform the heavy lifting incrementally. By pre-aggregating data at a specific granularity (e.g., daily totals instead of raw transaction logs), we shrink the dataset that the engine must process.

Consider a retail system tracking billions of orders. Rather than summing the total_price for every report, we create a table that stores the pre-calculated sums:

CREATE TABLE daily_sales_summary AS
SELECT
    date_trunc('day', order_date) AS sale_day,
    product_id,
    SUM(total_price) AS daily_revenue,
    COUNT(*) AS order_count
FROM orders
GROUP BY 1, 2;

Why This Reduces Latency

By narrowing the scope of the aggregation, you change the nature of the Query Plan. When a report queries the daily_sales_summary table, the PostgreSQL planner no longer needs to invoke expensive HashAggregate or GroupAggregate nodes over millions of rows. It simply performs a sequential scan or index scan over a drastically smaller set of rows.

When you combine this with Materialized Views (which we touched upon in our previous discussion on maintenance), you can refresh these aggregates during off-peak hours. This moves the computation cost from the user's request time to the background maintenance window.

This technique essentially trades storage space for query speed. While you add overhead for keeping the summary table in sync, you prevent the database from re-calculating the same values repeatedly, keeping your analytical dashboard snappy even as the underlying raw data grows exponentially.

Key Takeaway: Pre-aggregation transforms expensive runtime calculation into a simple data retrieval task by summarizing granular data into a lightweight structure ahead of time.
