Cumulative Sums for Trend Analysis

In this lesson, you will learn how to use window functions to visualize the steady build-up of metrics over time, revealing how individual data points contribute to a running total.

The Core Concept

A cumulative sum, or "running total," is a sequence of partial sums of a given set of data. While a standard SUM() function collapses your rows into a single value, a cumulative sum keeps every row in your result set but adds a column showing the accumulation of values up to that specific point in time.

This is essential for trend analysis because it allows you to see the "velocity" of your data. For example, if you are monitoring sales, a simple daily total might fluctuate wildly due to weekends or holidays. A cumulative sum, however, always moves in one direction (upward), allowing you to easily see the total growth trajectory over a month or year.

Implementation in SQL

To calculate a cumulative sum, we use the SUM() function combined with the OVER() clause. By specifying an ORDER BY inside the window, you tell the database to calculate the sum sequentially starting from the beginning of your time dimension.

Consider a table daily_sales with columns sale_date and amount:

SELECT
    sale_date,
    amount,
    SUM(amount) OVER (ORDER BY sale_date) AS running_total
FROM daily_sales
ORDER BY sale_date;

In this query:

  1. SUM(amount) defines what we are aggregating.
  2. OVER (ORDER BY sale_date) instructs SQL to treat the result set as a window that expands one row at a time based on the date.
  3. As the database moves to the next row, it takes the current amount and adds it to the sum of all previous amount values.

This technique is a powerful way to smooth out noise in your data. Instead of focusing on the volatility of single days, stakeholders can view the cumulative chart to understand how close they are to reaching a quarterly target or identifying the exact point in time when a growth trend started to accelerate.

Key Takeaway: Cumulative sums transform isolated snapshots into a continuous narrative of growth, making it easy to identify long-term trends that are often hidden by daily fluctuations.
