Executing CEP with Flink Pattern API

Construct complex event processing rules to detect specific sequences or patterns across multiple incoming data streams in real time.

In this lesson, you will learn how to use the Flink Pattern API to detect complex sequences of events across your data streams in real-time.

Moving Beyond Simple Aggregations

Up until now, we have used stateful functions and windowing to track metrics like "total orders per minute." However, those tools struggle to answer questions about the order and structure of events, such as: "Did a user log in, fail a transaction, and then immediately attempt a password reset?"

The Flink Pattern API allows you to define these "behavioral signatures" using a declarative syntax. Instead of manually managing state to track if event A preceded event B, you define a Pattern that acts as a state machine.

Constructing a Pattern

A pattern is essentially a sequence of conditions. You define the start, the subsequent steps, and the constraints (like time limits) for those steps. Here is how you might define a pattern for detecting two consecutive "Login Failed" events within a 10-minute window:

Pattern<LoginEvent, ?> loginPattern = Pattern.<LoginEvent>begin("first")
    .where(event -> event.getStatus().equals("FAIL"))
    .next("second")
    .where(event -> event.getStatus().equals("FAIL"))
    .within(Time.minutes(10));

Once the pattern is defined, you apply it to your DataStream using the CEP.pattern() method. Flink then manages the internal state for you, tracking incoming events and "emitting" a match only when the full sequence is satisfied.

Why This Matters for Data Engineering

Because this operates on the event stream, you aren't waiting for a batch job to finish to catch suspicious activity. You are evaluating patterns as every single record arrives. This is critical for fraud detection, infrastructure monitoring, and identifying complex user journeys where the relationship between events is just as important as the events themselves. By using the Pattern API, you replace complex, error-prone manual state management with a clean, reusable domain-specific language.

Key Takeaway: The Flink Pattern API enables real-time detection of complex event sequences by abstracting stateful sequence tracking into declarative, time-constrained patterns.
