In this lesson, you will learn how to leverage Trino to execute high-concurrency, low-latency SQL queries directly against distributed storage systems using your existing Iceberg metadata.
Bringing SQL to the Lakehouse
Up until now, we have focused on how Apache Iceberg manages and optimizes data at the storage layer. However, raw data in S3 or HDFS is useless without a powerful engine to interpret it. Trino acts as the distributed "brain" of your architecture, decoupling the compute layer from your underlying storage.
Because Trino understands the Iceberg table format, it doesn't need to perform expensive full-table scans. Instead, it reads the metadata snapshots and manifest files you’ve been optimizing. When you send a query, Trino’s coordinator breaks the SQL into smaller, parallel tasks, which are then distributed to worker nodes that read the actual data files directly from your object storage.
Example: Running a Distributed Join
Since Trino is a distributed SQL engine, it excels at joining large Iceberg tables without moving data into a traditional warehouse. Consider a scenario where you are joining a sales table with a customers table stored in an Iceberg format:
SELECT
c.region,
SUM(s.amount) as total_revenue
FROM iceberg.sales_db.sales s
JOIN iceberg.sales_db.customers c ON s.customer_id = c.id
WHERE s.event_date >= CURRENT_DATE - INTERVAL '30' DAY
GROUP BY 1;
When you execute this, Trino performs "predicate pushdown." It uses the Iceberg partition metadata to ignore irrelevant data folders and uses column-level statistics to optimize the join order. This allows Trino to provide near-instant responses for business intelligence tools, even when the underlying dataset spans petabytes of distributed storage. By using Trino, you transform your static data lake into a dynamic, interactive analytical platform that behaves like a high-performance relational database.
Key Takeaway: Trino provides the distributed compute power necessary to turn Iceberg’s metadata-rich storage layer into a performant, low-latency SQL interface for your modern data lakehouse.
