Executing Type 1 Overwrite for Data Correction

Apply direct updates to dimension records to rectify errors without maintaining a history of previous attribute values.

In this lesson, you will learn how to maintain accurate dimension data by directly overwriting incorrect attribute values without preserving their history.

The Concept of Type 1 Overwrite

In data warehousing, a dimension table often contains attributes describing our business entities, such as a customer’s email address or a product’s category. Sometimes, these attributes are entered incorrectly at the source. A Type 1 Overwrite is the simplest method for fixing these errors: you locate the record in your dimension table and update the value directly.

Unlike other slowly changing dimension techniques that might add a new row or a version column, the Type 1 approach keeps the dimension row exactly as it is, simply swapping the old, incorrect data for the new, correct data. Because you are overwriting the existing value, any reports or queries that run after the update will see the "new" truth as if it had always been that way.

Illustrative Example

Imagine we have a Dim_Customer table where a customer’s name was misspelled as "Jon Doe" instead of "John Doe." To perform a Type 1 correction, we execute a standard UPDATE statement:

UPDATE Dim_Customer
SET Customer_Name = 'John Doe'
WHERE Customer_ID = 101;

Once this command runs, the historical record of the name "Jon Doe" is gone. If your business requirements state that you do not need to track when the name changed or what it was previously, this is the most efficient way to keep your dimension table clean and your data quality high.

When to Use It

Use a Type 1 Overwrite when the current attribute value is the only one that matters for your analytical reports. It is perfect for correcting typos, fixing data ingestion errors, or updating information that doesn't carry business significance regarding "how things were in the past." By using this method, you avoid cluttering your tables with unnecessary historical versions while ensuring your dashboard metrics reflect the most current and accurate data available.

Key Takeaway: A Type 1 Overwrite is the go-to strategy for correcting data errors by directly updating the existing dimension record, prioritizing current accuracy over historical preservation.
