Dependency Auditing with Software Bill of Materials

Generate a SBOM for .NET applications to track vulnerable dependencies in the supply chain.

In this lesson, you will learn how to generate and utilize a Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) for your .NET applications to maintain visibility into your software supply chain.

What is an SBOM?

As your .NET microservices grow, they inevitably accumulate hundreds of transitive dependencies. A Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) is essentially an "ingredient list" for your application. It provides a structured, machine-readable inventory of every library, framework, and component included in your container image. By generating an SBOM during your build pipeline, you create a trail of auditability that allows you to instantly identify if a newly disclosed vulnerability (CVE) affects any of your deployed services.

Generating SBOMs in .NET

The most efficient way to generate an SBOM in the .NET ecosystem is by using the Microsoft.SBOM.Tool. This tool integrates directly into your build pipeline to scan your project files and produced artifacts, outputting them in standard formats like SPDX or CycloneDX.

You can add this tool as a global tool in your CI pipeline:

# Install the SBOM tool
dotnet tool install --global Microsoft.SBOM.Tool

# Generate an SBOM for your build output
dotnet-sbom generate -BuildDropPath "./publish" -PackageName "MyDotNetService" -PackageVersion "1.0.0" -Namespace "https://mycompany.com/sbom"

Integrating into the Supply Chain

Once generated, the SBOM should be treated as a first-class artifact alongside your container image. You should store the SBOM file in your artifact registry. Because you have already learned how to implement Automated Container Image Signing and Provenance, you should treat the SBOM as a signed attestation of your build.

When a security vulnerability is announced, you no longer need to reverse-engineer your containers or guess which versions are in production. You can query your SBOM database to perform an impact analysis across your entire cluster, identifying exactly which services contain the affected component. This proactive auditing turns "dependency chaos" into a structured, searchable data set, ensuring your security posture is as robust as your deployment patterns.

Key Takeaway: An SBOM acts as a transparent, machine-readable manifest that enables rapid vulnerability impact analysis across your entire distributed .NET environment.
